Croque Monsieur

INGREDIENTS

  • ½ cup whole milk - room temperature
  • 1 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon flour
  • 8 ounces aged cheddar or gruyere - grated
  • 2 tablespoons Cook's Pantry dijon mustard
  • 8 slices ham
  • 1/4 sweet white onion - thinly sliced
  • 1 cup Cook's Pantry dill slices
  • pinch nutmeg
  • salt and pepper
  • 4 croissants halved or 8 artisan bread slices

DIRECTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.
  2. Melt butter in small pot, add flour and cook stirring 2-3 minutes. Gradually add milk whisking until incorporated. Add pinch salt, pepper and nutmeg.
  3. Cook until thickened. Remove from heat, add ½ cup cheese and mix well to incorporate. Set aside.
  4. Spread dijon on both sides of Croissants or bread slices, add a slice or two of ham, next add onion slices then pickles, and sprinkle with a little more cheese.
  5. Close sandwiches and place on parchment lined baking sheet.
  6. Drizzle cheese sauce evenly over top of sandwiches and sprinkle with last of cheese. Place in oven 5-7 minutes until golden and bubbly. Serve immediately.
